Drive safely in a truck? This is how you do it!
Friday 3 November 2023
In Europe, we have some of the safest roads in the world. Unfortunately, this doesn't mean that accidents don't happen here. Even for truck drivers, who spend all their working hours on the road, caution is always necessary. Fortunately, the number of fatal accidents involving trucks has been decreasing in recent years. However, this doesn't mean we can drive recklessly. To help you drive as safely as possible in a truck, we have gathered some tips!
Take rest
Reduced alertness is a well-known cause of truck accidents. This is often linked to fatigue and drowsiness among truck drivers. These factors contribute to at least 10% to 25% of traffic accidents involving truck drivers. That's why legal driving and rest times for truck drivers have been established to ensure the safest conditions on the road. Driving while tired is just as dangerous as driving under the influence of alcohol. So, take an extra break if you're feeling fatigued. Take a short walk, stretch your legs, and then hit the road again as refreshed as possible. Always carry your digital tachograph, which keeps track of your driving and rest times, speed, and the vehicle's distance traveled.
Maximum dimensions and weight of the truck
Always be mindful of the width, height, and weight of your truck. The maximum length of a truck is twelve meters. Furthermore, a truck with a trailer must not exceed 18.75 meters in length and should not weigh more than fifty tons, including the cargo. The height of the truck is a maximum of four meters. Pay attention to these details to avoid unnecessary accidents and ensure safe driving.
Comfortable driving posture
Maintain a good posture while driving the truck. Ensure your seat is properly adjusted so you can easily access all controls. Adjust the headrest to prevent neck discomfort. Lastly, always wear your seatbelt to be protected when needed.
Ban on mobile phones
Since July 1, 2019, holding an electronic device for communication and information processing in the truck is prohibited. Therefore, it's not allowed to hold a phone, navigation device, or tablet while driving. If you are stationary, this rule doesn't apply but make sure the engine is not running. The use of a mobile phone while driving is prohibited because it distracts attention from the road, leading to accidents. Keep your mobile phone out of your hand and in a place that is not easily accessible while driving. Avoid temptation!
Watch your speed
Always pay attention to the maximum speed. This applies not only to truck drivers but to every driver. Trucks often travel at lower speeds than cars, but remain vigilant! Due to the heavy weight of the truck, the braking distance is longer than that of a smaller vehicle. Therefore, be mindful of your speed to prevent unnecessary accidents.
Safe driving!
Educate yourself on the rules for truck drivers so you can drive safely. As a driver, you spend so much time on the road that it's crucial to ensure you arrive safely and have enough rest after a long working day. Therefore, think carefully about your actions and their consequences for you and the traffic around you.
